An Awesome Day at Hampton Downs
Tuesday 22nd March marked the 9th annual Race4Life event at Hampton Downs. More than 70 New Zealanders facing Life limiting Illnesses were treated to rides in race cars, muscle cars and sports cars, on Harley Davidson
motorcycles and in massive transporter trucks. Many also had a chance to see the action from the air in a helicopter hovering over the raceway. This very special experience was made possible by more than 150 volunteers and a
stack of dedicated sponsors, most of whom have been loyal to the occasion from its beginnings in 2008.
“We couldn’t do it without our supporters, sponsors and volunteers,” said RACE4LIFE founder Viv James. “They continue to give so much and often find that the experience of helping someone live their lives to the full has enriched theirs too. It’s magic.”
Race4Life is an extraordinary event that brings together different communities and allows for a special connectedness, which is treasured by those privy to it on the day. Austin and Hamish Taylor, who both suffer from Muscular Dystrophy, took the opportunity to join us at Hampton Downs at this awesome event. Together with their mum Sharon, the boys enjoyed everything on offer.
The life expectancy for those suffering from Muscular Dystrophy is mid to late twenties. However this does not stop the Taylor boys from living their lives to the fullest.
Samantha’s Wish Come True
The Race4Life TRUST was formed in 2015 to incorporate the annual Race4Life event at Hampton Downs. The Trust’s main focus though, is to fulfil the wishes of Palliative care patients throughout New Zealand. Samantha Moore was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in October. After an initial misdiagnosis and a rigorous treatment programme, Samantha can now take a break from therapy. Samantha’s wish is to spend some time with her family, Maddison 7 and Ryleigh 3 and husband Ryan. Discover just how amazing the community of Rotorua have been, in extending their hospitality to Samantha and her family.
